Amaryllis flowers

You know when Christmas is on its way when the familiar Amaryllis bulbs start appearing in the shops. However, amaryllis are also fantastic cut flowers.  Large and striking, just a few can create a fantastic arrangement. They also have the advantage of being very, very, long lasting. Just a couple of things to remember when keeping amaryllis flowers. Regularly trim back the stem to keep it fresh. Also a tip is to keep an elastic band on the bottom of the stem, as the stems are hollow and tend to split otherwise.  Amaryllis flowers are available at Bloomers up to Christmas and into the new year.

Avington Park Wedding 2011

Bloomers have once again been asked to provide the flowers for a wedding at Avington Park.  Avington Park is a beautiful period house set in magnificent parkland with the River Itchen flowing through its grounds. The venue has a number of stunning rooms including a library, an orangery and a ballroom, which all could be straight out of a Jane Austen novel.  The wedding theme this time is a series of romantic, cottage garden style arrangements. which complements the period style of the house.

This cottage style is achieved through the selection of some cottage garden favourites such as scented stocks, delphiniums and phlox. Hydrangeas and large roses further add to the style and ensure that the displays create a stunning impact within the scale of the room.

Summer is hotting up!!

As well as a superb range of flowers Bloomers also sells plants. Particularly popular are our large Chilli and Pepper plants. Place outside in a sheltered spot or in a kitchen they are great to pick your own when cooking a Chilli con carne or Curry. Be careful the Chilli's are hot hot hot!

Top tip - collect some of the seeds and place in a paper envelope (this will help them dry) Next spring sow the seeds in a pot with some multi-purpose compost. Peppers and Chillis like it hot and humid, so water well and secure a plastic bag over the top of the pot. Place somewhere warm and the seeds will germinate very easily. Once the plants have germinated treat like tomatoes, lots of water and tomato food.

Another new Rose at Bloomers

A new Rose has just arrived at Bloomers. Its a beautiful large pink and peach rose which goes by the name of Miss Piggy. Miss Piggy is available at Bloomers and is competitively priced with other similar roses.

Here at Bloomers we are increasingly receiving requests for our bouquets from overseas. Sometimes its someone on a business trip wanting to say  'i miss you' or people on holiday who will miss an important anniversary or birthday of a family member or friend and want to say 'congratulations'

Weddings

 For a recent wedding the bride specifically requested  small but fragrant hand tied wedding bouquets. The bouquets consists of Avalanche Roses, white Lizianthus.  Lavender spears are punctuated throughout the design for form and that wonderful lavender fragrance.

Shower bouquets

Shower bouquets are definitely back in vogue. A number of brides this year have requested this style of bouquet.

This bouquet consists of black baccara and avalanche roses, ivory freesias, lizianthus with beargrass and soft ruscus foliage.  Diamante is scattered throughout the design.

This bouquet consists of Grand Prix and Vandella roses with lizianthus and waxflower. Eucalyptus and beargrass foliage complete the design.

 

Roses

There are a huge range of roses available and most are available all the year round. However, within this range there are a very limited number that are pure white roses.  The Akito rose is pure white, but relatively small. The Avalanche rose is large and impressive, but is ivory rather than pure white.

Recently, flower growers have been attempting to provide a white rose to fill this gap in the market,  A new rose has very recently been developed, its name is ‘Apres-ski.  It is a large pure white rose equivalent to the Avalanche rose.

At the moment Apres-ski is relatively scarce and a little more expensive than normal roses.  .

The Grand Prix and Passion roses are traditional red roses.  They are the atypical Valentines rose. However, for a maybe more dramatic effect other roses are available. The Black Baccara rose has the form of a Passion rose but is a deep deep red, which gives the appearance of black.

This can create a dramatic effect in any bouquet or floral arrangement.  Black Baccara roses are available to order from Bloomers.

Seasonal flowers

Here at Bloomers we aim to keep a broad range of flowers to suit all tastes and requirements. We replenish our stock very regularly to ensure their freshness.  Many flowers these days are available all the year round, however, some flowers are still very seasonal.  At the moment its the turn of the Cornflower.  This small, vivid blue flower is normally only available in June and July but as with a lot of seasonal flowers this year, it is early.  English Cornflowers are available at Bloomers for the next few weeks.

Wedding Flower themes

Many of our weddings have a theme running through the flower scheme. This can range from a particular set of colours, to a vintage style or maybe a cottage garden feel.  One of the more unusual themes, last wedding season was a World War 2 wedding 

The bride wore a wedding dress made from an authentic 1940’s pattern.

All the guests were in 1940’s outfits and 1940’s hairstyles. Ration book style food was served, at the reception.

For all our weddings, we take care to box up all the bouquets, buttonholes and arrangements to protect them during transportation. All the boxes are lined with brown paper. This got us thinking. With a bit of research we managed to replicate a Red Cross parcel to keep with the World War 2 theme. The bride and groom really enjoyed our little nostalgic contribution.

Presentation bouquet

Bloomers were proudly chosen to supply a Spring flower bouquet to Dame Mary Fagan DCVO, the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire.  Dame Mary was presented with the bouquet as part of the opening ceremony of the new Winchester Fire Station.

Weddings

Royal Wedding flowers

Catherine Middleton's wedding bouquet was a shield-shaped wired bouquet of myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth. . Myrtle in a wedding bouquet is a custom, which dates back to Queen Victoria. A sprig of myrtle from Queen Victoria's wedding bouquet was planted and sprigs from it have continually been included in royal wedding bouquets. Myrtle has also become very popular with our brides. We will always provide sprigs of Myrtle, on request, for good luck at no extra charge.
